Course Details
The course provides students with an overview of the roles and responsibilities of family justice counsellors in B.C. It describes the different ways that family justice counsellors help families to address their family law concerns throughout all stages of service delivery, from first contact and initial needs determination to assessment, pre-mediation and mediation. It also details other supports and services that family justice counsellors provide, including legal information, referrals to Parenting After Separation courses and other community and legal services, responding to family violence and other safety concerns, assistance with court and time sensitive matters, and conflict and communication coaching. The course draws upon theory and research from the fields of facilitation, mediation, coaching, and counselling as well as practice wisdom from family justice counsellors. The course also introduces policy and legislation relevant to the work of family justice counsellors.
